Vanishing Traditions

Ice is tossed onto a returning Crab Boat at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. The remaining members of the once vibrant SF fishing community (from 300 families to 30 in the past hundred years, according to spokesman Larry Collins), have been forced out of San Francisco by a rising cost of living and depleted fisheries. The West Coast commercial salmon season was canceled in 2008 and then again in 2009 due to concerns about overfishing. Most environmental groups say damns and other water infrastructure contributed to the diminished fisheries. April 11, 2009.
