The Salton Sea is located in Riverside and Imperial Counties, south-east of San Diego in the Coachella valley. A historically important feeding ground for migrating birds along the pacific flyway, it has only become more-so over the past 100 years, as 91% California's wetlands have disappeared.
Geothermal activity in the Salton Sea area is extremely evident, from the mud volcanoes to the approximately dozen geothermal power plants dotting the landscape. As the sea shrinks, CalEnergy and EnergySource hope to expand their operation, building more, higher capacity plants. These companies see geothermal as an important part of California's renewable, clean energy future.
