Robert Weimer is farmer in Merced County near Atwater, CA. He primarily grows almonds, sweetpotatoes and peaches. Bob, as he is generally known, has made significant investments in water efficiency over the years, and applies scientific rigor throughout his operation. The sole source for above-ground water in his area is Lake McClure, which is perilously low. Historically, the region has primarily relied on groundwater. Now that is more the case then ever. Drip irrigation in Weimer's almond orchard demonstrates the ideal, highly efficient irrigation method. Weimer said drip irrigation "turned a fair farmer into a good farmer, a good farmer into a great farmer, and a great farmer....into an excellent farmer", due to the increased ability to control and efficiently apply inputs (i.e., compost).
