Neighbors often bring Gains food or give him a little money, which he never asks for and graciously accepts. March 6, 2008. More to pass the time than for money, Gains paints pictures on bits of cardboard he finds, and sells them on the street. Gains and Charlie spend an afternoon sharing booze and stories, on March 2, 2008. Gains uses the local bus to get around town when he needs to. Gains spreads out some sleeping bags in a parking lot before bed, on March 16, 2008. After gains hurt his ankle, he had to wrap the cast in plastic bags to prevent it from getting wet in case of rain. Gains crosses Grove Street on March 6, 2008. Kevin Damian, 6, was born HIV positive. His mother died of AIDS four years ago at age 20. His Grandmother Teresa is the primary caregiver for both Kevin and his brother. Less than 25% of pregnant women in Mexico can access medication to prevent the transmission of HIV to their child. Mexico is one of only 61 countries worldwide with such poor coverage. Here, Kevin puts away the medicine he must take three times a day, on July 12, 2008. Kevin's grandmother Teresa tries to give him the medicine which keeps his illness at bay. The task can be simple or excruciating depending on his mood. June 30, 2008. Persuading Kevin to eat is a thrice-daily challenge, subject to his mood. Old Friend Seizure Zocalo mosh Street Game After a year long legal battle, the tenants of 1702 N. 8th Street in the center of gentrified Williamsburg, Brooklyn, have overturned an unlawful order to vacate. The landlord of the building (Jamal Alokasheh of 172 Realty capital, inc.) has refused to remove the padlock from the front door. On June 11, tenants and their lawyers removed the lock and re-entered the building. Their apartments, however, were found in complete dissaray and the landlord refuses to restore gas, sewage or water. Consequences of our massive remaking of the landscape include:  A stable, domestic food supply, a vast agricultural economy, damned streams, depleted fisheries, and endangered species.  This essay, which is still in progress, looks to capture this duality and provide a visual portrait of the various entrenched interests. Colonia Los Laureles, population approximately 80,000, is a shantytown settlement of mostly factory workers in the steep canyons along the US Border near Tijuana. During winter months, rain washes sediment and trash downhill into the United States and the Pacific Ocean. Unemployed farm workers Gonzalez Victorian and Federico Analla. Fresno County, CA. A passing construction truck kicks up dust along the Owens Dry Lake. In 1913 the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power diverted the Owens River to provide drinking water for the rapidly growing metropolis. Ten years later the Owens Lake had completely evaporated, along with any hope of heavy development in the region.
